Meat Checker is designed with privacy in mind. We do not require you to create an account and we do not sell your data to anyone.
What data we collect
Meat Checker collects minimal data to provide its service:
Search history — stored locally on your device only. We never transmit your individual search history to our servers.
Community submissions — if you choose to submit a community flag, safe place, or barcode report, we store the content of that submission (establishment code, flag type, notes) in our database. We do not associate this with your identity or device.
Location data — used only to show nearby establishments on the map. Your location is never stored or transmitted to our servers.
Barcode scans — barcodes you scan are sent to the Open Food Facts API to look up product information. We do not log individual barcode scans on our servers.
What data we do not collect
We do not collect your name, email address, or any personal identifiers
We do not require account registration
We do not track your location history
We do not use advertising or sell your data to third parties
We do not use analytics SDKs that track individual behaviour
Community submissions
When you submit a community flag, safe place, or barcode report, the content of your submission is stored in our database and may be visible to other users of the app. Please do not include personal information in community submissions.
We reserve the right to remove submissions that are inaccurate, misleading, or abusive.
Third party services
Meat Checker uses the following third party services:
Open Food Facts — an open database of food products. When you scan a barcode, the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts to retrieve product information. See their privacy policy at openfoodfacts.org/privacy.
Food Standards Agency (FSA) — establishment data is sourced from the FSA open data register. No personal data is shared with the FSA.
postcodes.io — used to geocode postcodes for map display. Postcodes submitted with safe places are sent to this service. No personal data is shared.
Supabase — our database provider, used to store community submissions. Data is stored on servers in the EU. See supabase.com/privacy.
Community submissions are retained until deleted by our moderation team or upon request. Search history is stored locally on your device and can be cleared at any time from the History tab.
Children's privacy
Meat Checker is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes via an in-app notice. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
